The Digital World

I both love and loathe the convenience the digital lifestyle offers. I believe the gradual change in modern technology will significantly impact us negatively and continue to part us from things that used to have more value to us, such as nature. Reliance to technology have also placed a thick border between what we find as barbaric or just plain weird. We see several societies living amongst nature without the convenience of the digital lifestyle and question why and how they continue to live their way. We have already entered the mindset to believe that the use of computers and video-games are what we claim to be normal, discriminating others for choosing an alternate route. We are blinded from the truth that one day, we may be overpowered by technology and become physically unable to go back to physical labor.
Though I see several negative consequences from too much reliance in the digital lifestyle. There are tons of beneficial aspects to this as well. The internet is the most convenient and fastest way to transfer messages when stuck in a urgent situation. It also allows communication between groups of people instead of manually sending handwritten letters to each individual person. Most digital entertainment systems are easily obtained as well. To boost the fun meter within your daily life, computers are often within reach and the TV remote sits on your couch, thought it may not be the healthiest lifestyle, but it allows the people to have a wide variety of entertainment within seconds. In conclusion, balance is key to maintain a both healthy yet convenient digital lifestyle.

  1. I really agree with your way of thinking, and how you wrote this post. The use of language is much more sophisticated than I was expecting it to be. I appreciate how you mentioned some societies that live without technology, and instead live in nature. I wasn't thinking of that angle of looking at things, but instead of focusing on the future and wondering how things will be like while we're growing up.

For the conclusion, I really got and agree that it is important to balance technology in moderation within our daily lives. You also stated your fear that our dependance on technology may affect us negatively, which is a fear that I've heard coming up a lot lately in our class.

I don't really like to watch tv,but I have one in my room and I have noticed how every time my friend or friends come over, they turn on the tv. I haven't really gotten sucked into being addicted to televisions because I don't enjoy them unless I'm feeling desperate to get distracted or watch a tv show. Where you said " what we find as barbaric or just plain weird" it made me think of how when my friends ask me if I watch tv, and I say no they get really surprised and ask me what I do in my life without it. I don't think of myself to be too absorbed in many things of technology like tvs, computers.. But I do depend on my cell phone and ipod a lot.

I really like all the things that you discussed in your post, like people not appreciating nature, how everyone has a remote on the couch, and your fear of the future. You could write about the kinds of electronics you depend on, i.e laptops, tvs, microphones, amps, etc.

Keep writing how you're writing! I look forward to reading more of your posts in the future.

  2. Thank you for the comment. I'm glad you can connect to my insight concerning the digital unit we are currently studying. I see that you aren't necessarily the people who have become consumed with the digital technology that surrounds us, but the fact that you can still see what im trying to say reassures me that I'm still sane and in control of how well I balance my daily daily use of digital technology.

I'm glad you agree with my conclusion since balance is a topic that I strongly believe to be significant. Overall, I feel as if everything should be balanced not just utilizing digital technology, but everything we do. Not stating that everyone needs to be perfect by following this rule, but maintaining balance allows you to get the best of both worlds.

I also understand how you feel when friends don't really approve of not watching enough TV. For approximately two years I have not watched TV, and I feel comfortable with how I live...my friends don't. I find myself lost when they talk about recent television shows, but at the same time I feel good that I havent wasted time absorbed in media.

It seems like you are conscious of your semi-dependency of digital tools like your cellphone and Ipod. The fact that they are portable makes them very convenient unlike the TV which requires you to stay in a certain location. If TVs were to be installed into cellphones or Ipods, I'd be a more active TV watcher than I am now.

I think fear is an element that we both share to be significant. Knowing that we both understand the concept of fearing how advanced digital technology has become, I wonder why people rely so heavily on it? My answer for now is that is has become a necesity to survive in a society like the one we currently live in. Thank you again for the insightful comment.
